Large Floor-Standing Planters

A large planter is not just a container, it is the thing that makes a tree look like it belongs in the room. A good specimen tree standing in the black plastic nursery pot it shipped in will always read as temporary; the same tree in a proper floor-standing planter reads as furniture. It is usually the cheapest upgrade you can make to planting you already own.

Scale is the thing people get wrong. As a rough guide the planter should be somewhere around a third of the total height of the tree above it — too small and the whole thing looks top-heavy and unstable, too large and the tree looks stranded. Also check the internal diameter against the nursery pot you are dropping in, not against the tree.

Weight is worth thinking about too. A heavy planter is a genuine advantage for tall trees and for anything going outdoors, where it stops the whole arrangement blowing over. Lighter planters are easier to move and better on upper floors and balconies. Browse the full planter range, or see large artificial trees for something to fill them.
